TASK1

LECTURES

Lecture 1: Typographic Systems

"All design is based on a structural system".  According to Elam, 2007, there are eight major variations with an infinite number of permutations:
  • Axial
  • Radial
  • Dilational
  • Random
  • Grid
  • Modular
  • Transitional
  • Bilateral
Typographical organization is complex because the elements depend on communication to function.  Additional criteria such as hierarchy, order of reading, legibility, and contrast also come into play.

The typographic systems are akin to what architects term shape grammars.  Similar the system has a set of rules that is unique and provides a sense of purpose that focuses and directs the decision-making.

Some may feel this imposition takes away intuition from a teaching point of view, it provides a solid framework that allows learners to be guided in their exploration while their intuition develops and matures.

8 Systems:

Axial System : All elements are organized to the left or right of a single axis.

Figure 1.1: Axial system

Radial System : All elements are extended from a point of focus.

Figure 1.2: Radial system

Dilatational System : All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.

Figure 1.3: Dilatational system

Random System : Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.

Figure 1.4: Random system

Grid System : A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.

Figure 1.5: Grid system

Transitional System : An informal system of layered banding.

Figure 1.6: Transitional system

Modular System : A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as a standardized unit.

Figure 1.7: Modular system

Bilateral System : All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.

Instructions

Task1/Typograpic Systems

In this task, we looked at eight typographic systems on youtube. These eight typographic systems includes Axial,Radial,Dilatational,Random,Grid,Modular,Transitional and Bilatera.

-Using Adobe InDesign only
-Size 200*200mm
-Allowed to use one other colour
-Graphical elements(line, dot, etc.)can be used but limitedly

Practical and process

Axial System:

The axial system is used in both of my works. The color blue is chosen because blue will make people feel comfortable. Blue is a cool color, which can make readers more calm after reading the poster. I tried to draw two axial systems, the first one with a line separating the content and the second one with the most subject heading separating the time and place.

Figure 2.1 : This process of axial system

Figure 2.2:Axial System(JPEG)

Fianl:

I chose the second option because I thought it would help readers see the main content of the poster more quickly.

Radial System

In the radiation system, I used four concentric circles of crossed lines and two crossed radioactive lines.

Figure 2.4:This process of Radial system 1

Figure 2.5:This process of Radial system 2

Fianl:

I chose the second radioactive line, because the first color is too full, it gives people a feeling of dizziness, it makes people look uncomfortable and the concentric circle effect is not very good, it always feels strange.

Dilatational System

Fianl:

Since I chose blue as the main color, I used blue strokes on some words to make the poster feel more simple and clear. I used circles of different sizes and colors to make the shell look, which is also more appropriate to the main color I chose

Random  System

This random system requires large amounts of text to be formatted and readable.

Figure 2.8:This process of Random system

Figure 2.9 : Random  System (JPEG)

Fianl:

I chose the second one. This style requires the layout of a lot of text on the poster in a chaotic way but to highlight the theme and readability of the text, so I used some blue strokes and blue shadows, which can make the reader know the theme of the article more clearly.

Grid System

Fianl:
This uses some squares to present the layout in different directions to enrich the content and color of the layout.

Modular System

Transitional System

Figure 2.14:This process of Transitional System

Figure 2.15 : Transitional  System (JPEG)

Fianl:

I chose the first one because of the interleaved typography to create visual differences

Figure 2.16 : Transitional  System (JPEG)

Bilatera System

The blue text in the middle is the theme, which allows readers to see at a glance and extract the content and text in the poster more quickly.

Figure 2.17: Bilatera System (JPEG)

Fianl:

I will choose the first one because it is more impactful and can more quickly lock in what the text is about.

TASK 2 :TYPE & PLAY

Finding type – We will be asked to select an image of a man-made object (chair, glass, etc.) or structures (buildings), or something from nature (Human, landscape, leaf,  plant, bush, clouds, hill, river, etc).
Ensure that the image does not contain many different elements.

This is a water ripple found on the Internet, and there are many letters in this picture that we can choose for ourselves

Figure 3.1: The picture form pinterest

I chose “H Z K A Y ”for the design

Figure 3.2: Design process

Figure 3.3: First product

However, because they did not know much about the water element, they changed the font.

Figure 3.4: Second product

Some strokes were added to make it look more like water ripples.

I know this poster is not good, I have now improved this poster.

FEEDBACK

Week2:
General Feedback:
This week we learned about eight different typography methods and designed them, and you can also use another color to design your own text.
Week3:
General Feedback:
Fonts should have consistency, including thickness, and fonts should have their own characteristics.
Specific Feedback:
I need to know more about the water element, instead of destroying the water element by not studying it. And watch more carefully.

REFLECTION

Experience:

Through exercises 1 and 2, I learned that there are other different typesetting methods, and I designed the text according to the eight typesetting methods given by the teacher. I find it incredible that I designed this. Of course, I still need more knowledge to explore and further study.

Observation:

I need more observation to improve my sense of font creation. My homework takes a lot of time to complete and the quality is not very good, so I am reflecting on why I spent more time and could not effectively improve the quality of my homework. Now I will observe other people's works in class to make up for the shortcomings of my own works.

Finding:

I want to improve my design level as soon as possible. The quality of design is very poor now. I will go to the library to read relevant materials in my spare time.

Further Reading

This book was written by Kimberly Elam and it helped me understand the typography system. There is a lot of information and references in this book for me to understand and learn from .
