INSTRUCTION

Task 3 :Type Exploration and Application

In Task Three, our assignments delve into the complex exploration of utilizing existing letter forms in a given domain, creating fonts, solving a broader problem, or being part of a solution in an area of interest. This process requires a deep understanding of its current use, increasing its usefulness in areas of interest, and a thorough examination of potential problems to improve the letter form and overall nature.

Task3:Type Exploration

1. Idea Proposal

At the beginning, I chose the first scheme, but the teacher said that there could only be one color in the font, so I had to give up the first idea, and then I wanted to use the fourth idea. It was Halloween at that time, and the font on the poster of Halloween in the square gave me the inspiration.

In a search on the Internet I found two examples for my reference.

2.  Sketches

In the draft, use Halloween elements to represent the font.

I imported all the words into FontLab and adjusted for some minor differences.

FEEDBACK

Week 9:
General feedback:
Write the idea on the PPT and complete the first sketch.
Specific feedback: The selected instance color is too rich and only one color is needed.

Week10: General feedback: In the production of lowercase letters should be written together with uppercase, if not written together will have the difference between short and fat. Specific feedback: We begin to determine the font type one last time.

Week11: General feedback: In the creation of lowercase should be noted, such as "g" and "j" need to elongate their tails, so that the font has a certain sense of balance and beauty.

Week12: General feedback: The spacing between words needs to be adjusted within this week.

Week13: General feedback: We need to export the text in fontlab, and make 4-5 posters, and also present the text, using no more than 1024 × 1024 artboards.

Reflaction

Experience:
Creating a completely new type of font was very enjoyable for me and started the journey of creating fonts. I used fontlab last semester, so I will be familiar with it, so it was not difficult to introduce the font. Although I met some problems, of course, I also solved them one by one, and did my best to complete the font.

Obervation:
In the process of creating fonts, pay attention to the height of the lower case, such as h and g. At first I didn't notice it at all, which caused me to spend a lot of time revising it.

Finding:
This exercise made a difference to my experience. The simplicity of their structural elements made it easy to copy and adapt them to create various other letters. This not only speeds up the design work, but also gives the entire font a consistent look and feel.

Further Reading

Figure 7.1:book

In typesetting design, several elements such as stroke thickness, direction, stress, form repetition and cross are used to achieve harmony and cohesion. Effective sketchbooks and process diaries are invaluable tools for capturing concepts and thinking about solutions to problems. By manipulating the spacing, placement, rhythmic order, and color of letter forms, metaphorical thinking is able to suggest other objects, sounds, and visual effects. This book is very good for us to understand the design logic and brainstorming of typesetting, so that we can better typesetting design.
